Blue Merlot at a Lousiana Library Near You! - June 20, 2010
The Blues is Alright...and fun, too!
Blue Merlot founders Joshua “Bubba” Murrell & Brenda DeKeyzer Lowry started Blue Merlot in 2001 and won the Louisiana Blues Challenge in 2002. Since that time, their Louisiana funk-and-sweetness has developed into a gumbo mixture of musical styles, with plenty of Louisiana seasoning. It prompted them to coin the phrase “Gumbo Funk.” Murrell and Lowry will be playing “unplugged” at Louisiana Libaries this summer.
Joshua Murrell is a Grammy-award winning engineer/producer, winning a Grammy for his work on Terrance Simien’s Live! Worldwide CD in the Best Zydeco or Cajun Album Category. He plays keyboards and guitar. Brenda is lead vocalist and plays rhythm (and 12 string) guitar. They released their first album in 2006 with their band, and are working on a second one.
They are both accomplished songwriters, and when they perform as a duo, they often “inform” as well. Listeners are treated to a bit of Blues history, and are sometimes surprised to learn that the blues isn’t always about…well, the Blues. This uniquely American music form is the basis of most modern music, and expresses a wide range of human experience – from sadness to sarcasm, often sprinkled with humor. In addition, Murrell and Lowry share some of their original songs and discuss the songwriting process.
A highlight of the show is Murrell sharing his Grammy award with attendees. Murrell and Lowry enjoy encouraging aspiring musicians, songwriters, and recording engineers.
Enjoy a show suitable for all ages. For more information, email bluemerlot@bellsouth.net or visit www.bluemerlot.com .
